Child Friendly Beaches near Hobart

Bellerive Beach is a very popular family beach as it is sheltered by the South Arm Peninsula. It is wonderful for picnics, walking, jogging and enjoying the spectacular view.


Lauderdale Beach. This pretty sheltered beach, located close to the airport is a wonderful beach for families. It has a picnic-friendly area shaded by trees offering an inviting place to sit and watch the world go by.  


Bluff Beach.  This beach not far from Devonport is a sheltered sandy beach with a huge bluff which allows wonderful views of the surfing and swimming going on below. It is also an aboriginal site and of historic interest. Bluff Beach is very popular with families as it is suitable for children of all ages.


Parks & Playgrounds in Launceston

Tailrace Park in Launceston is a hidden treasure with a great wooden maze as well as a play area.  The outdoor BBQ facilities are hugely popular during weekends and school holidays.


Aberdeen Street Park, Glebethis is a lovely playground with lots of play equipment but close enough to the domain Tennis Centre for older children’s activities also. The nice thing is that there are BBQs provided with shelter over the top in case of a shower making it a great place to meet up with friends.


The Gorge, Launceston has a lovely area for children with a little pool for hot days. The play area is nice and a small shop sells ice cream and treats. The walks are great for all but toddlers.


Punchbowl Reserve, Launceston this park has a great pond with plenty of ducks to feed, some nice walks and a good play area to satisfy all ages.


Heritage Forest Park has a lovely play area and BBQs so that you can extend the day and sizzle sausages at twilight. The play area is good and there are some nice walks from this spot.


Dru Point Reserve- this playground in Margate is a great multi access playground, designed to allow wheelchair access to most of the equipment. It even has a wheelchair swing although you must collect a key from the council to use it. The playground is a child’s heaven with swings, slides, and a boat for budding pirates, a train, sandpit, and lots of interactive pieces of equipment. With an adjacent playground for older children and lots of BBQs the whole family can enjoy ballgames or bike riding while tea is cooking!  If you prefer there is a kiosk which sells snacks to tide you over.

Keeping the children entertained in Launceston

Kids Paradise, Riverside: This is a relatively inexpensive indoor activity centre for children of all ages. A great venue for a rainy day. With playgrounds for under an over 5 it makes it a safe experience to burn off some energy before hitting the cage. A lovely touch is animal world where the children can stuff their new toy bear and then choose clothes to fit it.

Seahorse World: For something a little different, Seahorse World is a totally guided experience for all the family. With touch pools and a working seahorse farm this  attraction gives children an experience which they will not forget. There is a little café there also to break up the day.

Hillwood Strawberry Farm: This is a lovely day out for the family. With pick-your –own berries from November to May depending on the berries it is possible to keep little hands and mouths very busy. There is also an indoor and outdoor play area and some kid friendly animals to keep them amused. The café sells some very yummy


Keeping the children entertained in Hobart

Cadbury Factory, Hobart is located 25 minutes from Hobart. This is kids paradise as the chocolate aromas waft and they can tour the factory discovering Cadbury’s chocolate making secrets. Willy Wonka eat your heart out! There is also an onsite cafe where you can eat some goodies, enjoy a drink and satisfy your cravings!

Old Hobart Town: Transporting the children back in time this model village shows what Hobart looked like in the 1820s. Located in Richmond this is well worth the visit but Richmond itself is also a really lovely village to send the day in. Tahune Airwalk-this is a wonderful way to spend a day exploring the treetops and seeing what it is like being part of the rainforest canopy. The huge tees which are hundreds of years old are awe inspiring and as the bridges across the Huon and Picton rivers quiver and shake you feel a sense of nature’s grandeur. There are walking trails to please everyone and as you make your way down to the forest floor you can enjoy the cool shade while coming up close with the micro world below. The café provides some wonderful Tasmanian food to satisfy all tastes. Alternatively take some sausages to throw onto the BBQs or a picnic.
