A message from the Lord Mayor of Hobart
The City of Hobart is one of the most beautiful and liveable Cities in the world.
As the second oldest city in Australia and nestled at the foot of Mt Wellington, Hobart offers a wonderful blend of both building and cultural heritage; environment; a vibrant art and dynamic sporting culture and a low stress lifestyle. Hobart is renowned for its beautiful parks, fine restaurants, the world famous Salamanca Markets and its Festivals.
Set between graceful plane trees and the mellow sandstone facades of historic warehouses, Hobart's famous Salamanca Market attracts thousands of locals and visitors. Enjoy the sights, sounds, flavours, action and colour of Australia's best outdoor market - proudly operated by the City of Hobart and is open every Saturday from 8:30am to 3:00pm at Hobart's Salamanca Place.
Walk across the Salamanca Lawns to the picturesque waterfront and docks, where hard-working fishing boats are berthed close to cruising yachts and a square-rigger or two.
The Port is a central focus for the City providing both a busy commercial hub and a place where residents and visitors alike can spend time strolling along the docks talking with the local fishermen, watching the large cargo vessels load and unload, while they sample fine Tasmanian produce at one of the many cafes and restaurants located around the cove.
Hobart is the gateway to the best quality food and boutique wines and the famous Tasmanian salmon, crayfish and cheeses, raspberries and strawberries, beers and chocolates. This unique setting provides for an ambience that you will not find in another city anywhere in the world.
It is a city of innovation and ideas—a place of growth and promise with exciting and diverse opportunities for investment and development. Hobart is the capital of Australia’s only island state, and it offers a lifestyle that is the envy of other cities.
As we continue to grow, our focus is on long-term development projects that will benefit the Tasmanian community, and enhance the wonderful qualities of our capital city. We want to work with you on exciting projects and to expedite the approval process wherever possible.
We’re proud of our economic success and our history, and we’re inspired by our future
The city has a robust commercial and professional centre and is a hub for many of Tasmania’s major industries. Hobart is an international port and Australia’s gateway to the Antarctic and is also a centre for innovative scientific and medical research. Recent and continuing development in the city has energised the CBD, in keeping with the long-term vision for the city’s future.
Hobart is a city of opportunity, with exciting and continuing scope for investment and development. In defiance of current trends, Hobart is immersed in a period of exciting growth. The development program now taking place in the inner city is the largest in the capital’s history. Only recently Lonely Planet listed Hobart in the 10 must visit cities in the world, clearly telling the travelling public to “book their passage”. Hobart is a commuters dream – everywhere is uniquely accessible and our 10 minute peak hour would be the envy of congested cities everywhere.
In spite of the economic pressures experienced by the state, Hobart is growing—through a significant upward swing in commercial real estate sales and development.
Hobart is unique among Australia’s capital cities.
