TAFE stands for Technical and Further Education which offers vocational tertiary education for students interested in workplace skills. These VET courses are mostly practical in nature and offer certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas. These qualifications can assist you getting in to University or help you find a job. In general VET courses are shorter and less costly than university degrees. No prior grades or qualifications are required except regulasr schooling up to Yr 10, 11 or 12.
- certificate I–IV —teaches industry specific introductory skills and training; teamwork, literacy and numeracy and communication skills communication, skills, literacy and numeracy, and teamwork. Courses run from a few weeks to up to 2 years.
- diplomas — paving the way for enterprise, industry and para-professional careers these courses require one to two years of full-time study. Some diploma courses can be completed at university level.
- advanced diplomas —provide a high standard of practical skills for employment in specific career areas, such as engineering, accounting and building design. Some advanced diploma courses can be completed at university level and generally require 18–24 months of full-time study.
- vocational graduate certificates/diplomas — these are the equivalent of the higher education graduate certificate or diplomas. They usually require 6-12 months full-time study and provide high level employment-related knowledge and skills. The graduate certificate requires 6–12 months of full-time study. The graduate diploma requires 1–2 years to complete.
