Most rental properties in Australia are generally unfurnished, which may mean there is no furniture and no white goods such as fridge, washing machine or dryer included. Should you not intend to bring your furniture with you, or need extra you may wish to visit:
- New Furniture General: Ikea (www.ikea.com.au )who can either post or put you in touch with a freight company as there is no store in Tasmania. Also Freedom Furniture (www.freedom.com.au) for household basics. A range of kitchen essentials and household accessories including sheets, towels, plates, cutlery and more go to Target (www.target.com.au) or Kmart (www.kmart.com.au).
- White Goods: Electrical appliances: Harvey Norman (www.harveynorman.com.au) or The Good Guys (www.thegoodguys.com.au) 2nds world for Factory 2nds at reduced prices (www.2ndsworld.com.au).
- Rental Furniture You can rent individual items of furniture as required (such as a fridge or outdoor setting) or you can rent a 2,4, or 6 person furniture package that will include everything you need in one go. The longer your rental then the cheaper the weekly price becomes. You will usually need to pay at least a month's rental in advance, and also a security deposit which is refundable on return and will be charged a delivery fee. Visit our rental furniture section for more information.
- Second Hand Furniture Many people resell their furniture, often very cheaply, when they leave Australia. See www.gumtree.com.au ( a website showing free listings of everything including furniture for sale), ebay (www.ebay.com.au) or visit the local charity stores (www.vinnies.org.au) to find options near you.
