There has been a sizeable increase in the number of universities in Australia since the 1980s. There are currently 43 universities in Australia with nearly a quarter of these ranked in the top 200 Universities across the world.
Many International students come to Western Australia to complete their studies. If you are an Australian permanent resident you will only need to pay part of the cost of your University fees - the federal government can assist with the rest. These students can opt to pay the fees required in full each year or to use a student loan scheme. This Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) lets students repay their loan once their income/salary after graduation rises above $28,000 per year. If you are not a permanent resident, you will be required to pay the annual fees in full. Students who do not have an Australian passport may also be charged additional fees on top of those Australian passport holders pay for their university fees.
