If you are moving to Perth or Western Australia you may not know that TAFE stands for Technical and Further Education. TAFEs provide a wide range of vocational tertiary education that is practical in nature and would suit students who are keen to learn workplace skills and training. These VET courses result in diplomas, advanced diplomas and certificates which can pave the way to entrance into university or help you secure a job. One bonus is these courses are shorter and not as expensive university degrees. No prior qualifications are neccessary other than having completed Yr 10 or above of school.
- certificate I–IV —offers introductory skills and training, such as literacy, numeracy, teamwork and communication which are industry specific. Course length varies from a few weeks up to two years.
- diplomas — these courses are for those interested in enterprise, industry and para-professional careers. Diplomas require up to two years of full-time study.
- advanced diplomas —specific careers, such as accounting, engineering and building design require the high level of practical skills that an advanced diploma offers. Advanced diplomas take 18–24 months of full-time study.
- vocational graduate certificates/diplomas —the graduate certificate and graduate diploma are the equivalent of the higher education graduate certificate or diploma. They offer a high standard of employment-related skills and knowledge. The certificate mostly requires 6–12 months of full-time study and the diploma mostly requires 1–2 years to complete.
