There are wonderful schools in Melbourne catering for children with specific disabilities as well as schools which specialise in areas, such as music, sport or performing arts.

 

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Schools in Melbourne and Victoria

There are some schools that cater specifically for deaf children but there are also a number of public schools that employ signing interpreters, and have access to additional funding support for hearing impaired children (both oral/aural and sign dependent or those with cochlear implants).

Blind or Visually Impaired Schools in Melbourne and Victoria

Insight has opened a new inclusive independent Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired at Berwick for children from pre-school up to aged 13 and also supports other programme within schools. See www.insightvision.org.au

Insight's mission is to ensure the provision of quality education services, including access to core curriculum and necessary therapy services, to students who are blind or vision impaired and who may have additional disabilities and in the near future, Insight will be establishing Satellite Mainstream Specialist Primary Units embedded inside partner schools - 4 around Melbourne and 4 in country Victoria to give children local access to the same specialist primary education as students at the Insight Berwick School.

 

Physical/Mental and Learning Difficulties – Schools in Melbourne

There are a variety Schools in Melbourne for children with physical disabilities, mental disabilities, learning difficulties and behavioural problems. Some schools cater for a specific disability, such as autism, and some are for children with a range of special needs.

Performing Arts

There are some schools that cater specifically to the performing arts, such as  Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, Southbank which is a state school which specialises in music and dance alongside academic studies for 200 talented students who are accepted via competitive audition. www.vcass.vic.edu.au

There are a number of Public/State high schools in Victoria which combine secondary education with focussed sports development programs and excellent sporting facilities.

Essendon Keilor College - In a partnership with the Melbourne International Tennis School, Essendon Keilor College offers a specialist program combining academic work at the college with tennis coaching designed to prepare students for the international tennis circuit.
