If you are moving to Melbourne or Victoria you will find pe-school education options for children in the years before they start school, usually from the age of 3yrs-5yrs. Although early childhood education in Victoria is not compulsory, it will make the transition to school life easier. There are kindergarten options through the state, usually two sessions a week for three year old kindergarten and four sessions a week for four year old kindergarten. Early Learning Centres will have longer hours and Child Care Centres will run their program within the day but offer care around those hours. Kindergarten sessions generally sessions run between 9am and 12 noon and then 12.30pm to 3.30pm. Some child care centres offering kindergarten programs run for longer hours from 7.30am to 6pm, which is a good option for working parents.
