If you are moving to Darwin and want to study but not go to university you may consider TAFE which stands for Technical and Further Education. TAFE runs vocational courses called VET courses suited to students who want to learn workplace skills and training in industry. These courses tend to be less expensive and shorter in duration than University degrees but can pave the way for University or entering the job market. No prior grades or qualifications are expected other than having completed school to years 10, 11 or 12.
- certificate I–IV — introductory training and skills which is industry specific such as literacy, numeracy ,communication and teamwork. Some courses can be completed in a few weeks and some take up to two years.
- diplomas — one to two years of full-time study paving the way for para-professional careers, industry and enterprise.
- advanced diplomas — Around 18–24 months of full-time study providing a strong level of practical skills for employment in specific career areas such as accounting, engineering or building design.
- vocational graduate certificates/diplomas — the equivalent of the higher education graduate certificate or diploma and provide high level employment-related knowledge and skills. 6–12 months of full-time study for the graduate certificate but the graduate diploma generally requires 1–2 years to complete.
