If you are moving to Canberra or ACT and needing childcare there are some good options. Childcare is available for children from 6 weeks old at some Child care centres and you have the option of all day or part time care. Sometimes the cost can seem high and this is mainly due to the legal staff/child ratios imposed on those caring for children under 3 yrs of age. Another alternative is Family Day Care where carers look after your child or children in their own home. In Canberra carers may care for a maximum of 7 childen who are under 12 and up to four who are under schools age. There is flexibility so that it can be just before and after school type care or full time or part time, just for emergencies or during holidays only. This is a smaller more personalised option compared to a child care centre but remember that there will be limited facilities (playground/climbing frames etc).. You might also consider a nanny. Nannies either live in or live out with a working week ranging from 40-60 hours per week. Au Pairs are also an option and live with the host family who give them a small allowance in exchange for childcare and some household work.
