The Australian Health system is made up of a mix of public and private sectors and is regarded as one of the best health systems in the world today. The public health system is called Medicare and is available to all Australian citizens, permanent residents and for overseas visitors that come from countries that have a recipricol health care agreement with Australia. Health Insurance is encouraged to supplement the public health system and there are associated tax benefits. For most overseas visitors that come to work/live or study in Australia health cover is mandatory and a requirement of their visa. Alternate therapies, such as acupuncture or traditional Chinese medicine are widely available in Australia but may not be reimbursed by Medicare or covered by your health insurance provider.
