TAFE stands for Technical and Further Education and offers courses focused on vocational tertiary education. They are practical courses and suit students who are interested in training and workplace skills in industry. No grades or prior qualifications are required beyond having completed Yr 10, 11 or 12 at school. The courses on offer are known as VET courses and result in diplomas, certificates or advanced diplomas which can help you achieve university entrance or get a job. In many cases these courses are shorter and also less expensive than university degrees.
- certificate I–IV —these certificates provide introductory skills and training and focus on industry specific skills; Communication, skills, numeracy, literacy and teamwork. Courses run for a few weeks up to two years.
- diplomas — these courses prepare you for enterprise, industry and para-professional careers. Some courses can also be completed at university level. Diplomas require 1 to 2 years of full-time study.
- advanced diplomas — specific career areas, such as building design, engineering or accounting require a high level of practical skills, that an adanced diploma can offer. Some of these advanced diploma courses can also be completed at university standard and require 18–24 months of full-time study.
- vocational graduate certificates/diplomas — Providing high level employment -related knowledge and skills, these are the equivalent of the higher education graduate certificate or diploma. In most cases, the graduate certificate requires 6–12 months of full-time study and the graduate diploma requires 1–2 years to complete.
