Physical/Mental and Learning Difficulties – Schools in Adelaide and South Australia

There are different types of education options in Adelaide and South Australia for children with physical disabilities, mental disabilities, learning difficulties and behavioural problems. Education support is found within mainstream schools and each are under the control of the principal of that school. They generally cater for students with the lowest level of support requirements and who integrate with the mainstream students for some of their educational program.

Schools which specialise in certain subjects

Specialist Physical Education and Sport Schools provide opportunities for students to develop skills and pursue careers in physical education and sport.

Wirreanda High School coordinates the Southern Vales Physical Education and Sport program involving Christies Beach High School and Reynella East High School. As part of the program Reynella East offer a Basketball and Cricket course and Christies Beach provides a focus on Aquatics. Wirreanda High school offers Australian Rules Football, Netball, Soccer, Dance, Basketball, Surfing, Cricket, Volleyball and Outdoor Recreation. Students can follow their Specialist Sport through to Year 12 in SSABSA accredited subjects.

Henley High School provides talented athletes with the opportunity to further develop their sporting skills and knowledge in one of eleven sports (Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Soccer, Softball, Surf Life Saving, and Tennis). Students are able to gain accreditation in coaching and officiating as well as complete a number of competencies for completing a Certificate II in Sport. Students are able to participate in the program from Years 8 to 12 and complete SACE requirements. The aim of the program is to provide a balanced education in addition to supporting students in reaching the highest level possible.

Special Interest Sport Programs

Some schools in South Australia conduct an intensive program in a specific sport in conjunction with the relevant state sporting association. There is a selection process for entry into these programs. All students of the school have the opportunity to benefit from the focus in that sport.
