In South Australia pre-school is a planned education program for children in the years before they start school, and there will be children who are at pre-school aged 3, 4 and 5 depending on birthdates. Although early childhood education in South Australia is not compulsory, it can make the move to school life easier. Children learn basic skills which will prepare them for school and they can also benefit from the socialisation with other children of their age. Pre-school usually runs between 9am-3pm – similar to school hours with the option to send your child 1-5 days per week. Some pre schools run for longer hours from 7.30am to 6pm, which is good for working parents.
If your child turns four before May 1 they can start pre-school in TERM ONE of that year. If your child turns four after May 1 then your child will start pre-school in TERM ONE of the following year.
