All religions can be freely practiced in Australia and religion does not really have a significant impact on government or society. Over two thirds of Australians regards themselves as Christians although not all are practicing. Christians are made up of Roman Catholic, Anglican and other Christian denominations. There are significant numbers of Jews and Muslims, and a growing number of Buddhists. Almost a fifth of Australians, however, would say they were non-religious. Australia's Aborigines whose Rainbow Serpent mythology is recorded in rock shelter paintings believed to be over 7,000 years old are representatives of the longest continuous practising religion.
