Australia, which is situated in the southern hemisphere, is the smallest continent but in fact ranks as the sixth largest country by land mass. Surprisingly, Australia is almost as large as USA and is 32 times larger than the UK. Australia’s neighbours are New Zealand across the Tasman Sea and Papua New Guinea across the Torres Strait.
When people think of Australia, it is the beaches and deserts that dominate their imagination. Australia is, in fact, the largest country which is surrounded by water and is also a country where a fifth of the land is desert. Australian’s can enjoy the South Pacific Ocean in the east, the Indian Ocean on the west coast and there are thousands of islands off the coastline.
